Fan Back Windsor Side Chair

This is my version of a chair design by Curtis Buchanan. The design is light, flexible, strong, and exceedingly comfortable. It makes a perfect dining chair.

These chairs are built using a traditional Windsor style of construction. The joinery takes advantage of working with fresh "green" wood and controlling the drying process. A shrinking wet mortise combines with an expanding super dry tenon to create a mechanical lock that has been shown to hold up to centuries of use in some examples. 

I work with a local farmer to source the wood for these pieces. We selectively harvest trees with specific qualities known to produce the best and strongest chair parts. I bring the logs back to my home shop and hand split every component (except the seats) from the log with axes and wedges, ensuring maximum control of the wood grain in each piece. All the long surfaces are finished with a spokeshave after being turned on a lathe. This sharp hand tool leaves a lightly faceted and glassy smooth surface that is a joy to touch. The crest rail is steam bent to ensure a strong, but slender component. The seats are carved using traditional hand tools. The milk paint finish is hand burnished allowing the wood grain to still show through the paint.
